VA Funding Fee Refund Eligibility and Process: What Veterans Need to Know in 2026

November 4, 2026

5 Mintues

A VA funding fee refund returns the one-time funding fee paid on a VA-backed home loan to a borrower who qualifies for an exemption. You may qualify if the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) later awards service-connected disability compensation with an effective date before your loan closing date.

Who Qualifies for a VA Funding Fee Refund in 2026?

You may qualify if the VA awards disability compensation after your loan closes but assigns an effective date before your closing date. For example, if you close on March 15, 2026, and the VA approves compensation effective January 10, 2026, you may be eligible because the effective date precedes closing.

If the effective date falls after your closing date, the retroactive-compensation refund rule generally does not apply, because you were not yet entitled to compensation at closing. A higher disability rating after closing does not qualify by itself; the effective date of the compensation award controls.

Disability Percentage and Other Exemption Routes

The VA’s exemption criteria cite receiving service-connected disability compensation and state no minimum percentage. The VA also exempts borrowers who:

  • are eligible for compensation but receive retirement or active-duty pay instead;
  • receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation as a Veteran’s surviving spouse;
  • are service members with a proposed or memorandum rating before closing; or
  • are active-duty members who show evidence of a Purple Heart on or before closing.

An exemption removes the fee at closing; a refund returns a fee already paid.

How Do You Request a VA Funding Fee Refund?

Call the VA Regional Loan Center at 877-827-3702 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Then:

  • Check your award letter for the compensation effective date.
  • Find your closing date on your Closing Disclosure.
  • Compare the dates to confirm the effective date precedes closing.
  • Gather records: award letter, loan records, and funding fee payment details.
  • Follow the VA’s instructions, including whether a written request is needed.

Your lender or servicer can also initiate a correction request in VA’s payment system.

Delayed or Denied Requests

If your request stalls, call the same number and confirm the VA received it. If denied, ask for the reason and recheck your two dates.

What Is the VA Funding Fee Refund Timeline?

The VA Office of Inspector General (OIG) reports that guidance gives regional loan center specialists about 20 business days from assignment to review a refund request. The OIG has documented far longer waits in some cases, so follow up.

Refund Amount and Payment Method

Eligible Veterans are entitled to a refund of the fee previously paid, so keep your payment record. VA guidance says it remits the refund directly to the borrower; lenders need not reduce your principal. If a lender paid the fee on your behalf, the lender may be entitled to the refund.

How Does a VA Funding Fee Calculator Help?

A calculator estimates the original fee from loan amount, loan type, prior VA loan use, and down payment. It cannot confirm an exemption or guarantee a refund.

FAQs

1. Is the VA funding fee refundable?

Yes, for eligible borrowers whose compensation effective date precedes loan closing.

2. Does the VA automatically refund the funding fee?

Not always. The VA runs an automated process that identifies many retroactive-rating cases, but the OIG found it missed some. Call the VA Regional Loan Center to confirm.

3. Can I avoid paying the VA funding fee?

Yes, if you meet an exemption listed above.

4. Does a proposed disability rating after closing qualify?

No. A proposed or memorandum rating obtained after closing does not support a refund. A later compensation award may still qualify if its effective date precedes closing.
